Why is the surge capability of MELF resistors much higher than chip resistors?
Many electronic circuits encounter high-pulse loads. Due to its unique cylindrical design, the resistance area of MELF resistors is larger than chip resistors so that they can withstand higher pulse energy.
Simple Test
Firstohm SRM204T in series with a 1206 anti-surge chip resistor, each with AC 10.5W applied for testing, comparing their ability to withstand long-term surge impact.
Under the same test conditions, chip resistors cannot withstand this pulse energy(broken).
