Case Study
Following 2050 net zero carbon emission requirements, many large enterprises, such as Taiwan Power Company, are aggressive in preparing energy storage equipment and establishing power storage stations, hoping to pioneer the transformation to green energy. Therefore, in addition to the requirements of following legal systems, it’s foreseeable that more and more enterprises will adopt energy storage devices.
We are glad to share with you the heating states of Firstohm resistors applied on a 4.2V lithium battery for a partial reference to the battery balancing design. As illustrated in the below diagram, each battery cell will be balanced passively via a resistor. Once power is overcharged, the resistor will transform the excess energy into heat for release to keep each battery cell in the same electric energy.
This test simulates that the battery cell continuously outputs 4.2V to the resistor until the resistor reaches heat balance and measures the average temperature below points then. The test PCB diagram is shown above. (Top View)
Original solution: 5W Through Hole Resistor
Implementation: 5W MELF Resistor, SMD, small size, low cost
Test condition:
Ambient Temperature:26℃, Voltage of Battery Cell: 4.2V, Resistors: EFP501 (5W, 18R, 5%)x 12PCS connected in parallel
Measurement points: T1: 2mm from the edge of the resistor, T2: the resistor body, T3: surrounded by the resistor (center point)
Test Result (Average temperature): T1: 60.76℃、T2: 102.55℃、T3: 123.94℃
MELF resistor: Cylindrical construction ensures the effective film area is increased by three times, making it the largest SMD thin film resistor. While operating at high temperatures, the larger ceramic body ensures better heat dissipation.
MELF resistors are the first choice for high-reliability professional electronics. The above test is for reference to energy storage equipment (passive balancing circuit).
